Undying Dev0ti0n

Men are often being seen as tactless and women are often complaining that they have not been appreciated by their husbands and they care even less about their feelings. However, this infamous myth regarding men may have come to an end. How many times in a day do you read an article about a men expressing his love to the women he loves in the newspaper like what Chan Ki Yap did? It is not everyday news that we can hear someone declares their love through advertisement. Back in a few months ago, a lover bought 999 roses as a gift to his darling on a Valentine Day. I must say these women must be really pleased and proud to have such a loving partner. Credit must be given to these two men who value their lover and brave enough to declare their undying devotion. While most of us think that men possess stone heart cold but what these two men did told us that not all men are doomed to failure and there are still men who value and treasure their love. It is important for all of us to enjoy every moment that we can spend with our loved ones which could be our family and friends and not just lover because we don’t know when they will be called back by The Creator and it would be too late to feel regret if they have been called. Therefore let us cherish every precious moment that we spend with our loved ones and make Chan Ki Yap be the example of how one should appreciate their love for now and forever.

Critical Reading

So far I love college reading because it is not heavy and you won’t lose your mind just to understand course. What I have understand throughout the semester (in the simplest way to explain) :
-Main idea is what the author trying to tell you or what the text is all about.
-Pattern of organization tell us what to expect of the paragraph. For example we have cause and effect. In other to have better understanding of the text we must know what is the pattern of organization of the paragraph. It helps us not to be confused.
-I love fact and opinion because it is the easiest. Fact is something you can check for it’s validity where as opinion is what one thinks and it might have bias and other people might disagree with it.
-Bias means favors one side over the other.
-Tone tells us what the author feel about certain topic.
-Purpose is the objective of the author to write the text.

For me the most difficult skill would be tone because I find it hard to understand the real tone that the author used. The easiest would be fact or opinion because I can distinguish it better.I would probably use Main idea skill to help me to read to understand the text. I might apply fact or opinion and main idea skills because I like these two the most.To understand Tone better (which is the most difficult skill for me to conquer), I listen and focus during the discussion in the class and try to gain better understanding of the topic. For me critical reading it means that you have to analyze and evaluate what you have read, read between the lines and read more complex texts other than the usual stuff you read. Critical reading very important as we have to produce our own opinions and can’t merely depend on what we read. We have to analyse more complex texts and critical reading is essential to produce good academic writing (so we can get better marks and can graduate! Yay!) I am normally apply Main idea, bias and purpose .

Reflection on blogging

For our college reading class, we are required to have a blog. I find it an exciting new experience as I have never used it before. I like to use blog in the reading class because this is the only class that required us to have our own blog and we get to do new things. We can play with our creative side to decorate our very own blog (for me, this is my very first blog) and we get to read our friends thoughts too. I definitely would recommend other teachers to use blog for responding to class reading because for me I love to type using computer than hand writing and this is new experience compared to our usual send in assignment that we have been doing since schools. I would recommend other teachers or lecturer to use blog because this is a lot more interesting than sitting in the class and listen and listen until some of us fall asleep (which is not me..hehe) as students are given more authority to do (or decorate) their assignment . Blog is fun, addictive, and exciting as we get to explore the computer. I get more excited to learn because I can use the computer (I love computer!) as it is more interactive and fun. I will only learn if I’m interested in it and blogging is fun! We get to read others thoughts and analyze it from other perspectives. We gained more understanding and sharpen our mind. It also helps us to be more competitive to do better assignments and to be as good as our friends example Afiqah and Azila (because they get good comments!). For me I love the comment feature because we get response(s) for our work so we know how to improve our self. For me the comment is the most helpful. It makes my adrenaline rush through my veins just to read what others think about my work. At first, it is difficult and confusing to use the blog because I’ve never used it before. To add comment, to decorate blog, to publish your work, to add more stuff are very confusing and frustrating at first. But as the time pass, I’ve learn more and with A LOT of help from Afiqah, I’ve now know better on how to handle my blog though I still need help from her from time to time. Blog or blogging is more fun because we can make it more interesting and interactive according to our taste and we won’t fall asleep in the class. Hence, we don’t have excuses to say our lesson is boring because we can always make it fun to suit our mood. Most of my friends enjoyed using blogs because it is a new experience for most of us. With blog I can share with my friends about my thoughts and I am free to express my thoughts. For me, blog means fun, cool, interesting and fun (again!)

Nepalese Sherpas

This article is about Nepalese porters which can carry loads on their backs. The loads might sometimes weight more than 100 pounds. Their amazing ability stunned the scientists and they have been carrying out many research to find how the Nepalese porters can manage to carry heavy burden on their back.

This article contains some biases.

BIASES FOR

1.If you've ever watched Nepalese porters in action, you might think they have superhuman strength.
The article is favouring the Nepanese porters by saying that they have superhuman strength.

2.How else to explain their ability to carry loads weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), mile after arduous mile over steep Himalaya terrain?
Their ability is said to manage carry up to 100 pounds loads.

3.His latest study, which appears tomorrow in the journal Science, now suggests that the porters of Nepal are even more efficient at their tasks. Precisely why, however, remains a mystery.
This sentense is a bias for because it says that the porters are more efficient in their tasks compares to other groups that are using their bodies to carry loads.

BIASES AGAINST

1.. How else to explain their ability to carry loads weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), mile after arduous mile over steep Himalaya terrain?
The author don't like Himalaya terrain and says that it is arduous where as other people might prefer Himalaya terrain to be arduous and even enjoyed it.

2.the word Sherpa, a term for one of the country's ethnic groups, has become synonymous with "porter."
Stereotyping, often with overgeneralizations full of inaccuracies.

3.A typical Nepalese porter carries a load nearly as heavy as he is.
Not all typical Nepalese porters can carry load as heavy as he is .

4.She added that the feat is particularly impressive because "they're [generally] not very well equipped [and] have very bad shoes."
False assumptions, based on weak or inaccurate information.

5."It's amazing how universal carrying loads on the head is—except in Western Europe and North America," he said.
Bias against the people in Western Europe and North America who carry things using their heads.

6.But they certainly don't struggle beneath their burdens as the rest of us might.
How do they know that the porters don't have to struggle?
They must have had face some difficulties. Some of us who are not porters also might have the ability to carry loads and don't have to struggle not just Napelese porters.

Figurative Language

Possessed by Love
In the dim glow from a bathroom night-light, she made out a ghostly shadow on the wall and froze, terrified
- METAPHOR
0bject being compared is the women shadow and a shadow of a ghost which is mystery and scary. It shows that the women is trying to hide herself by exposing less of herself.

One day as Munger headed out for groceries, Ford blocked the door, saying Zen gods inside him were refusing to release her.
- ALLUSION
the voices that Ford heard was said to be Zen Gods.
Zen is connected to Buddhism.

Months turned into years, and Kathryn Keats began to emerge from her cocoon.
-METAPHOR
Keats was hiding from her ex-lover and when she was finally free, the writer compared her freedom as emerge from cocoon.

My hell was finally over
- ALLUSION AND METAPHOR
All the nightmares is over when Keats ex-lover is dead and she is finally free from her hiding.
Hell is being compared to her misery over the years. Hell is a figure in Bible.

UKM sex survey: A few lessons to be learnt

OPINION

That led many to say that it evidenced moral decay among girls.

Women are again made out to be the guardians of morality. The All Women’s Action Society (Awam) is much dismayed by the overwhelming focus on girls and girls’ sexuality

Morality is not just about sex and sexuality. In the larger sense, morality is also about ethics, good governance, transparency and accountability.

The sheer callousness with which the participants’ right to privacy was dismissed points to a "might is right" attitude among the authorities which bodes ill for any hope of academic independence.

Awam hopes that lessons may be drawn from this fiasco. When a social problem is addressed, the best way to go about it is to deal with the matter holistically. If the concern is teenage premarital sex, then both boys and girls have to be studied before any awareness programmes may be designed

Finally, academic and research integrity must be maintained at all times, or the public will lose all confidence in the quality of research conducted by local institutions.

FACTS AND OPINION

The most "shocking and controversial" result that reportedly came out of the High-Risk Female Youth Profile study was that only one out of 887 girls surveyed admitted to being a virgin.

Was there a similar research focusing on boys in the first place, conducted simultaneously with the research on girls?

If there is a need for a "special training module to promote high moral values" among girls, surely this will apply equally to boys?

So we are gravely concerned by reports that the state authorities ordered officers to contact the participants of the survey to "verify" whether they have had sex.
